Paper Palace
$25.00
Paper Palace is a bi-monthly mail subscription service for pencil-and-paper games, delivered direct to your mailbox. Every other month, you'll receive a discursive, graphics-filled letter in a No. 10 envelope with a complete set of instructions for a new pencil-and-paper game for 1-2 players. Each letter will feature a new game, culled from years’ worth of research using 19th century educational anthologies from the library stacks, ancient Angelfire websites, academic mathematics journals, experimental children's development titles from The Whole Earth Catalog, and other hard-to-find sources. You'll receive a brief history of the game, common strategies, and any other information that seems relevant to the topic at hand.
The subscription period runs for five issues, through Spring 2025 Missed the most recent subscription period? Buy back issues here.
Letters also include "Palace Intrigues," the readers' section of Paper Palace, with a page or two devoted to letters, notes, requests, trivia and greetings from other subscribers.
Each letter also includes a piece of paper ephemera to practice on, rescued from the depths of the discarded technical manuals section at the world-famous Ax-Man Surplus in St. Paul, Minnesota.
These games are suitable for all ages and skill levels, and can be played in any number of settings:
+ on hold with a customer service representative
+ sitting on a bus or train
+ at a restaurant or bar on a napkin or menu
+ at home with your kids
+ on vacation
+ in the kitchen at a boring party
While Paper Palace is suitable for any age, parents sharing a subscription with children younger than 12 or so should be advised that they may need to explain adult concepts such as international arms trafficking and French New Wave films to them after reading the letter.
