No Pirates, No Copies: A Visual Catalog of UK Video Club Logos, 1980-1995

For a brief period in the 1980s and ’90s, thousands of independent video libraries appeared on British high streets and neighborhood shopping parades. Named for a recurring anti-piracy phrase found in period advertising, No Pirates, No Copies collects over 100 logos from video libraries and clubs across England, Wales and Scotland, from the era of the video nasties and beyond, including businesses serving Britain’s South Asian communities. The collected logos document the exuberant early visual culture of independent British video rental. Assembled by Andy Sturdevant, primarily from local newspaper advertisements.
